Tuesday and Wednesday Runs

Tuesday’s run was 7 miles before work. The last run at Sumbawa for this week, it turned out to be influenced by music. Waking up and getting out the door, my iPod greeted me with AC/DC’s “Back in Black”. A good song to get things started in the predawn jungle. Plans were to complete 2 laps of the 5k loop.  Somewhere after 4 miles or so, my mind was telling my body that it was tired and had enough for the day. That’s when the song “Suspicious Minds” by the Blaggards came on. This song can easily be related to running. Your mind is always telling you that you should stop, that you can’t go on like this. I found that I could go on. The last mile of the run was at a faster pace then I have run for a long time, due to the fast tempo of the fiddle in the  song “Botany Bay” by the Blaggards. This pushed me to run a pace almost 1:30 faster for the last mile.

I was back in Bali for Wednesday’s run. After dropping the wee lad off at school, I drove out to the Canggu Club to start. This run was always going to be affected by my sprint finish on Tuesday. And the temperature was already up with a “feels like” temp of 95. I started off at a good pace, but was forced to slow down to a run with a few walk breaks on the inclines. The run ended up being 4.9 miles long. Could I have run another tenth of a mile to make it an even 5 miles? Of course. But remember folks; you can’t build endurance in one day. You can get an injury that will force you to miss your planned race.

Get your rest. The long run on the weekend is going to be 18-20 miles.
