The light rain started just after the first mile. I was already up and out the door, so a little rain was decidedly welcome. The roads were darker than normal and my headlamp drilled a tunnel through the gloom. Usually my long runs would be a steady slow-paced affair. This run was different. I was forced to do sporadic sprints or surges to position myself into safe areas that would allow the traffic to pass . It seems like when there is a bit of rain the drivers are all over the road. A quick sprint would put me in an area where I could get onto the meager shoulder of the road. Thinking about it later, these surges were a great workout. Granted, I had to take some walk breaks on the last couple miles.
I was trying out some new nutrition on this run. I mixed up a bottle of Ucan Super Starch and drank this along with my normal water. Also ate a Hammer Bar at about 9 miles. I found that I didn’t have any stomach issues adding these 2 new things to a few Energy Gels. Really not sure about any benefits to the Super Starch drink or the Hammer Bar since I was pretty much out of energy.
It is important to remember that there isn’t a supplement or energy drink that is going to make up for a lack of training fitness, so I will continue to try this nutrition strategy and not pass judgment too quickly. Finding out that I can stuff a bunch of different things in my stomach and not have issues is nice to know.
